OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMME

2nd year – 3 hour symposium co-ordinated by palliative multi-disciplinary team. We explore the process of dying, how this impacts on families and looks at how staff cope with these issues as well as how to seek out support. We also discuss some of the ethical issues around end of life care e.g. assisted dying.

3rd year – week long placement at Countess Mountbatten House comprising lectures and tutorials including – breaking bad news, symptom control, spiritual aspects of death and dying, bereavement. Students also spend a session on the hospice ward or with the hospital palliative care team. (Sample timetable attached)

5th year – two afternoon sessions based in the hospital comprising some symptom control revision. Students are then required to prepare a presentation and lead a discussion about a case they have seen, an ethical issue or another topic pertinent to palliative care.

PLEASE NOTE THE MEDICAL CURRICULUM AT UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON HAS CHANGED FROM THE 2013 INTAKE. PALLIATIVE CARE TEACHING WILL CHANGE AS A RESULT AND THE PRECISE STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE IS STILL UNDER DISCUSSION.
