OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMME

Day 1(half day):

Introduction: patient from ward asked to discuss what it is like to be an in-patient and then open out to wider pall med discussion.

Introduction to Palliative Care, Pain, Medicine tasting, Syringe driver

Day 2:

Cases used to discuss symptom management

Group work to work through real cases: involve prescribing, completing DNAR forms etc

Day 3:

Lecture on Artificial nutrition and hydration, discussing clinical, legal and ethical issues.

Bereaved carers' workshop where students interview bereaved carers then MDT facilitated discussion on what they learn from this.

Communication course including role play

Day 4 (half day):

Emergencies in Palliative care

EOLC

Final round-up session including MCQs

One day placement in hospice / with HPCT or CPCT for each student (not long enough!)

Day 5:

One-day placement in hospice / with hospital or community Palliative Care Team for each student (not long enough!)
