Is palliative care a compulsory part of the course?

Yes

No

If yes, how many hours are timetabled?

-        Compulsory: 4 week teaching block in the 4th year - which equates to 15 full days, incorporating 3 days Advanced Communication Skills.  Students have a “log-book” which has core competencies which must be signed off by a supervising clinician.

-        Elective: Students also have the opportunity of engaging in a Special Study Module (SSM) in Palliative Medicine at four points in time in their first three years of training.  The SSM is a four week self-directed module where students normally produce a systematically structured review of an area of palliative care – such as symptom management or ethical challenges. IN their 5th year, students can take a  SAMP (Selective in Advanced Medical Practice)  - a 7 week clinical elective in Palliative Medicine.

Is palliative care examined in Finals exams or at other points in the course?

Yes

No

If yes, please give details:

-        Directly: there are approx 10 best answer MCQs, and 1 Short Answer Question in each of the Formative, Final and (where needed) Re-sit.

-        Indirectly, issues relating to Palliative Medicine and communication are present in OSCE stations, but there is not a “dedicated” Palliative Medicine OSCE.

-        During the student’s 4 week placement a log book with identified “core competencies” must signed off by a supervising clinician.
